Previous Experience

Member of Dutch Parliament 1994-2002

Portfolio included Foreign Affairs, Africa and Europe, Technology, Interior Affairs, Education, Welfare and Health. Policy expertise includes all aspects of information and computer technology; development, environmental and conservation issues in Africa and European policy towards Africa; domestic and European issues of education, culture and science, welfare and health, small business and entrepreneurs, ethnic groups and youth.

As a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Liberal Party (VVD), I also served as a delegate and Member of the Assembly of the Council of Europe (CoE)

The CoE meets several times a year in Strasbourg. It is a large non-governmental organization involving dozens of countries from around the world and plays a major role in political bargaining with nations particularly on human rights issues. The Assembly scrutinizes the decisions of the Council of Ministers. I served on its Committee on Culture, Science and Education, and Committee on Agriculture & Environment, as well as the North-South Institute, which aims to bring aid from Europe to Africa and Asia. I have also served as rapporteur for a number of CoE policy documents.

Member of the Assembly of the West European Union (WEU)

The WEU meets regularly in Paris and conducts parliamentary scrutiny for decisions made by European countries and associate member countries such as Turkey and Ukraine in the area of defence and security. I served on the Political Committee, which makes strategic decisions, as well as the Committee on Aerospace, Administration & Budget.

Official Observer, United Nations, New York

I worked with the Dutch UN delegation in New York. Observed UN committee meetings, sessions, and met with various delegations, over two months. December 1998. November 2001.

  • International magazine edited by CNN’s Richard Wilson, aimed at business executives and government officials. Topics of my articles/interviews have included: Kofi Anan (UN), Gerrit Zalm (Minister of Finance), Jo Ritzen (World Bank).
  • Contributor and Reviewer for French academic magazine Liber, edited by Pierre Bourdieu (1991-1994)
  • Wrote brief French reviews of Dutch and English academic publications, such as J. Goudsblom’s book Fire and Civilization (Penguin), and co-authored a longer French article with the Dutch Politician & Political Scientist B.Y. Cadat on ‘Citizenship and Migrants in The Netherlands.’
